AND IT WAS STUNNING.

These hot pools of earth vomit were quite literally our planets insides coming out. Waiotapu is home to acres of geothermal boiling “mud pools.” The bright colors have to do with the kind of sediment surfacing. Yellow is generally Sulfur, Orange represents Antimony.

“Wai-O-tapu” in Maori means ‘Sacred Waters.’

Walking the 3km trail is just a small glimpse into the Taupo Volcanic Zone.
